About Our Fragrance Oils

About Soyacandles.com fragrance oils

Unlike essential oils that are plant-based, fragrance oils are a synthesized formula of natural fragrances, so they usually require lower concentration than essential oils to achieve the same fragrance intensity, and often require less expensive raw material to produce scent than essential oils (especially those very rare or expensive essential oils, such as roses), although in candles, quality fragrance oils burn just as well and cleanly as natural oils.

Fragrance oils can replicate almost any existing scent, making them highly valued by more interesting, niche candle makers. From the names of some fragrance oils, it is even possible to predict that it is a synthesized fragrance , as such essential oils are simply impossible or very expensive to extract.

Fragrance oils are often deliberately chosen for use in candles to conserve natural resources, and only in aromatherapy products that do not have direct contact with the flame (wax melts, reed diffusers, room mists), essential oils are chosen.

It is important to know that there are also low quality, cheap fragrance oils (as well as essential oils) on the market. Such scents are usually immediately felt as synthetic. High-quality, fresh and clearly sourced and fully documented fragrance oils will be as pleasant to the nose and safe to use in the final product as essential oils.

More about our fragrance oils

These concentrated fragrance oils we offer are designed and manufactured in Europe, safe to use, verified, with mandatory documentation (MSDS, IFRA, Allergen Declaration).

We note in the description of every fragrance oil if it has these features:

  • phthalate free,
  • CMR Agent-Free (without carcinogenic, mutagenic, reprotoxic substances),
  • suitable for vegans (formula does not contain products of animal origin),
  • cruelty-free.
  • all our fragrance oils are lilial-free (CAS 80-54-6 or butylphenyl methylpropional)! The EU banned its use in cosmetics since March, 2022, when it was found to impair fertility. Lilial is an organic chemical compound that often gives a floral scent either of cyclamen or lily of the valley, however, the EFSA Opinion found that it was shown to have toxic effects on humans in regards to reproduction. Therefore the compound could no longer be considered safe.

We recommend preparing the mixture in proportions in grams and only then measuring the required volume in milliliters, as the weight in grams of different mixtures will not correspond to the volume in milliliters, as the densities of all fragrance or essential oils are different. Example of calculation by the fragrance concentration in wax mass method: when 100 g of wax is present and 5% fragrance concentration is required, 100 g x 0.05 = 5 g fragrance. The total weight of the mixture will be 100 g + 5 g = 105 g. Maximum - 10 percent - the fragrance concentration of 1000 g of wax requires 100 g of fragrance, the total amount of the mixture will be 1100 g.

We note if a fragrance contains vanillin. When the oil contains vanillin, it means that such fragrance oil can change the color of candles, bath and body products, soaps in a short or long period of time, lead to corrosion of metal and aluminum containers. It is recommended to make candles in glass jars.

We note fragrance combustion temperature (Flash Point of Fragrance). This is the temperature at which the fragrance oil can ignite in an open flame or from a spark. This temperature is relevant for gel candle manufacturers, as gel wax is recommended for fragrance oils with a burning temperature higher than +76.7°C, also some fragrance oils with a low burning temperature are not allowed by some suppliers to be sent by air mail. Please note that a fragrance oil will not ignite poured into molten wax, which is at a higher temperature than fragrance combustion temperature. Also, the low burning temperature of the fragrance oil does not mean that the smell in the candle will be faint, but it is recommended to pour the wax with the fragrance oil as soon as possible.
