Safety Guide of Concentrated Fragrances

How to handle concentrated fragrances safely?

Safety - first

When done correctly, wearing protective gloves and goggles when pouring oil from a small bottle may seem unnecessary. On the other hand, improper storage of the bottle or pouring from larger containers may result in oil spillage. Remember that the aromatic oils in the bottle are concentrated and only after pouring into the wax its concentration becomes harmless. Try not to inhale the concentrated fragrance or essential oil from the bottle - to test the smell, just add a few drops of oil to the hot water. It is recommended not to smell for too long - it will be difficult to assess the smell later when the nose "gets used" to it and you might become nose-blind.

Therefore, when pouring, weighing, mixing concentrated fragrance or essential oils with non-hazardous bases (wax, home fragrance base or similar), especially when working with larger quantities and doing it daily, we recommend taking care of your health and using these respiratory and skin protection products:

  1. reusable respirators (half masks) with organic gas and vapor filters such as comfortable and high quality 3M 7500 series half masks (these are recommended for exceptional comfort and fit, most popular medium size M) and organic gas and vapor filter such as 3M A1 series models 6051, 6051i (with filter expiration indicator) or A2 series models tested with higher concentrations of concentrated evaporators, 6055, 6055i (with filter expiration indicator);
  2. chemical resistant (nitrile) gloves.

How to care for, store and use fragrance oils:

  • Mix the fragrance oil with the wax in a ratio of 4-8 g of oil - 100 g of wax. The ratio depends on the specific smell and taste. 6 g of fragrance oil per 100 g of wax would be the optimal ratio for initial testing.
  • Pour the fragrance oil into the wax just before pouring the wax into the molds or vessels, mix thoroughly, making sure that no air bubbles form.
  • Avoid getting the fragrance oil on your skin or eyes.
  • Don't smoke. Avoid open flames or other potential sources of ignition (e.g. electrical appliances).
  • When making candles, heat the wax only to the recommended temperature.
  • Do not inhale the fragrance oil or apply it to the skin.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after using fragrance oils.
  • Properly ventilate the rooms where you make candles.
  • Store fragrance oils in closed containers, away from heat sources.
  • Keep fragrance oils out of the reach of children or animals.
  • Do not pour fragrance oil directly into drains or watercourses.

First aid measures:

  • If fragrance oil gets on your skin - take off contaminated clothing, wash skin with plenty of water, you can use soap. If irritation persists or skin damage is visible, call a physician immediately.
  • If fragrance oil gets in your eyes, flush them with plenty of water for at least 10 minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists or visible tissue damage.
  • If you accidentally swallow fragrance oil - rinse your mouth with water, then drink at least 1 glass of milk or water. Contact a doctor immediately.
  • If you have inhaled too much fragrance oil - go out of the room to breathe fresh air, rest. Contact a doctor immediately.
