TEFACID® 1 VL is a hard candle-making raw material suitable both for 100% stearin pillar candles and as an additive for increasing the hardness and modifying the structure of softer waxes.

Although commonly marketed as stearic acid in candle making, TEFACID® 1 VL is more precisely a C16–C18 fatty-acid mixture consisting primarily of stearic and palmitic acids.

Its raw-material base includes both animal- and vegetable-derived components.

Applications

Suitable for:

• 100% stearin candles;
• pillar candles;
• tall, narrow candles;
• taper candles;
• moulded candles;
• decorative solid scented wax ornaments;
• hardening softer candle waxes;
• modifying the structure and opacity of wax blends.

As a Wax Hardener

A practical starting level in wax blends is:

approximately 10–30%.

Stearin can:

• increase wax hardness;
• increase opacity;
• improve dimensional stability;
• modify shrinkage;
• assist mould release;
• change burn and melt-pool behaviour.

The optimum percentage depends on the base wax and desired finished properties.

100% Stearin Candles

TEFACID® 1 VL can also be used as the main raw material for 100% stearin candles.

These candles are typically hard, white and opaque and are particularly suited to tall, narrow pillar and taper formats.

Wick Selection

Use wicks suitable for stearin candles.

Final wick size depends on candle diameter, stearin percentage, fragrance, colour and wick construction.

Always confirm performance with a full burn test.

Fragrance & Colour

Suitable candle fragrance oils and dyes may be used.

Any addition can influence hardness, shrinkage and burn behaviour, so each formulation should be tested separately.
